VICHR & CO., PRAG - Ein Blick in die Geschichte

Mit der Gründung der neuen Fabrik 1913 in Lysá nad Labem bei Prag legte Petr Vichr die Basis des Unternehmens, das in den nächsten Jahrzehnten zu einem der größten seiner Art in der Tschechoslowakei werden sollte.

Anfang des Jahres 1914 begann die Fabrik mit der Produktion von kleinen Haushaltsgeräten und einigen Metallmöbeln, mit dem Ausbruch des ersten Weltkrieges ging sie jedoch vollständig zur Kriegsproduktion über. Mit dem Ende des Krieges begann eine diversifiziertere Produktion mit teureren Gütern. Dazu gehörten verchromte Möbel, Holzaccessoires, Wohn-, Schul- und später Büromöbel. /

With the establishment of the new plant, 1913 at Lysá nad Labem near Prague, Petr Vichr putted the bases of the company who will became in the next decades one of the largest of its kind in Czechoslovakia.

At the beginning of 1914 in the factory started the production of small household equipment’s and some metal furniture but with the outbreak of the first world war, the production went entirely to war production. A more diversified production including more expensive goods started with the end of the war. This included chrome plated furniture, wooden accessories, home furniture, school furniture and later on office furniture.

In den Jahren 1920 bis 1930, in denen die europäischen Avantgarden auf der Suche nach einer neuen Ästhetik als Ausdruck des Glaubens an das neue Leben war, wurde die Vichr A Spol. mit 700-800 Mitarbeitern eine der größten des Landes und 1938 eine Aktiengesellschaft. Nach dem Krieg bestand die wesentliche Aufgabe darin, den Bedarf an Wohnraum zu decken, und überall in Europa wurden neue Siedlungen mit erschwinglichen Wohnungen angeboten.

Ein Wendepunkt war die Ausstellung zeitgenössischer Kultur in Brünn (1928), die die neue tschechoslowakische Ausrichtung auf funktionalistische Ästhetik und industrielle Produktion zeigte. Deren wichtigsten Aspekte waren die natürliche Qualität des Materials und die Reinheit der Formen, die an den Produktionsprozess angepasst sind, mit dem Ziel, den breiteren Massen, Qualität und Wohnkomfort zu bieten. Stahlrohr wurde zum Symbolmaterial der neuen Ära und zusammen mit anderen Unternehmen des Landes, wie die Mücke Melder Werke, Hynek Gottwald, Slezák, UP Závody, SAB und Tatra, produzierte Vichr A Spol. eine breite Palette von Stahlrohrmöbeln, darunter Entwürfe von Mart Stam und Marcel Breuer sowie Kreationen tschechischer Avantgarde-Architekten und eigene Werksentwürfe. /

Between 1920 and 1930, in the years of the European avant-gardes struggle in the search of a new aesthetic as expression of the faith into the new life, the Vichr A Spol. became one of the largest in the country with 700-800 employers and in 1938 became a joint-stock company. The essential task after the war was to fulfill the need of housing an everywhere in Europe were new settlements with affordable flats where offered.

A turning point was the Exhibition of Contemporary Culture in Brno, 1928 which showed the new Czechoslovak orientation toward the functionalist aesthetics and industrial production. The most important aspects of the creation became the natural quality of the material and the purity of shapes adapted to the production process with the final aim to provide quality and living comfort to the broader masses. Tubular steel became the symbol material of the new era and together with other companies in the country as Mücke Melder Werke, Hynek Gottwald, Slezák, UP Závody, SAB, Tatra, Vichr A Spol. produced a wide range of tubular steel furniture including designs by Mart Stam and Marcel Breuer together with creations of Czech-avant-garde architects and company design.

Mit dem Ausbruch des Zweiten Weltkriegs wurde die Produktion des Unternehmens ausschliesslich auf die Kriegsproduktion ausgerichtet. Am Ende des Krieges 1945 wurde die Vichr a Spol. von der nationalen Verwaltung übernommen, und 1946 durch Zusammenschluss mit den Müke-Melder-Werken Fryštát, Hynek Gottwald Brandys nad Orlici, František Jergl Brünn, Robert Slezák Bystřice pod Hostýnem, Trezoria Praga, SAB Praga und Robert Slezák Vysoká nad Kysucou zu dem nationalen Unternehmen KOVONA verstaatlicht. Die Möbelproduktion der Vichr a Spol. endete 1946. /

With the outbreak of the World War II, the production of the company was reoriented to the war production. In 1945, at the end of the war the Vichr a Spol. went into the national administration until 1946 when the company was nationalized and the national enterprise KOVONA was formed by joining together the Müke-Melder Werke Fryštát, Hynek Gottwald Brandys nad Orlici, František Jergl Brno, Robert Slezák Bystřice pod Hostýnem, Trezoria Praga, SAB Praga and Robert Slezak Vysoká nad Kysucou. The furniture production of Vichr a Spol. ended in 1946.
